About Avast One
Avast One Essential is the free plan we recommend most for people who want more than Defender. It brings excellent lab scores (full marks at AV-TEST in the round shown below; the AV-Comparatives rating is on the lab’s page, linked below), a basic VPN, and tools Defender lacks. The full story includes 2024, when the FTC ordered Avast to pay $16.5 million for selling user browsing data via its former Jumpshot unit. The practice has stopped and the settlement is public. Avast and AVG share the same engine under Gen Digital, so pick whichever interface you prefer.

What Avast One costs after the first year
Avast One costs $49.08 for the first year and $77.99 a year from the second year on the Premium Security, 1 Windows PC + 1 mobile device plan, an increase of 58.9%. Both amounts were printed on avast.com when we read the page on September 8, 2026. Auto-renewal can be switched off in your Avast account; the vendor’s own instructions are on its support page.
