Question & answer

What is the best antivirus for Mac?

The short answer

Intego Mac Internet Security is the best Mac-specific choice. It has been built only for macOS for decades and knows Mac malware best. Bitdefender is the best cross-platform option for mixed households. Norton 360 is the strongest bundle on Mac.

In detail

Mac security is its own field. The threats are mostly adware, fake cleaners and infostealers rather than classic viruses. Software that fights macOS instead of working with it gets dropped by users fast. Intego has done nothing but Mac security since the nineties. Its VirusBarrier and NetBarrier feel native to the Mac. They catch Mac-specific threats first and respect the system.

For households with Windows PCs and Android phones next to the Mac, a cross-platform suite is more practical. Bitdefender’s Mac app has the same top-shelf engine with ransomware protection and web filtering. One subscription covers every device. Norton 360 brings its VPN and backup to macOS as well.

Whatever you pick, keep it in proportion. On the Mac, built-in protection and careful installing carry more of the load than on Windows. A paid product earns its place mainly through web protection. Most Mac trouble starts on the web. It also spots new adware campaigns faster and covers the rest of your devices. As on every platform, a scary popup about your infected Mac is itself the infection.
